Although Trollope's fourth novel The Warden is sometimes criticized for the narrator's frequent intrusion, what has to be noticed is when and why he does it in the narrative. The intrusion is closely related to his genuine love for the characters on an equal basis. Moreover, the narrator tells us their feelings using the adverbs such as "perhaps" and "probably". In short, the characters are not under the control of the narrator but living of their own free will, which proves Trollope was already taking a step toward maturity as a major novelist in The Warden.
