The use of pairs can be vary advantageous in teaching languages and other subjects in which the teacher wishes to have the students discuss the materials they are learning. The students are given maximum opportunity to speak freely in class without fear of ridicule if they make mistakes, and the class is more enjoyable and rewarding because the students are participating actively in the class. However, to be effective it must be used properly. The classroom and teaching materials must be suitable for using pairs. The students must understand clearly how to use the materials given to them since the teacher will not have direct contact with all the students as they practise simultaneously. Pairs can be used at the university level to compensate for large classes to allow the students to begin using the English they learned in secondary school. It could become a way for Japanese secondary schools to really begin teaching English rather than an artificial "examination English." It works well for teaching children because competition can be used to make a game out of the learning process, helps prevent them from becoming restless in class, and lessens discipline problems. In classes at language schools and companies, it can create a more pleasant social medium and give the students maximum opportunity to speak freely in class. It could revoluntionize radio and television language learning programs and language laboratory classes by allowing students to speak as well as to listen. Pairs, properly administered, could provide a solution to many of the current language learning problems in Japan, and give students in others fields an opportunity to formulate and express their ideas. Surely, this is essential if Japan is to be an international leader in business, science, education, and culture.
