Technology concerning LNG carrier has been developed by lots of progressive engineers more than 50 years since 1950's. About 200 LNG carriers are in operation in 2006 and have an excellent long record of safety and stable transportation at sea. Their successful development including reliable cargo containment systems (Membrane type, Moss type, SPB) and a conventional propulsion by steam turbine must be one of key factors in great growth of LNG trading today. Recently, larger LNG carrier and alternative propulsion systems instead of a conventional steam turbine are investigated in term of economical prospects. LNG carriers with larger cargo capacity up to 250,000m^3 with "Slow-speed diesel driven propulsion & NG re-liquefaction system" or "Medium-speed dual fuel diesel generator & electric propulsion" are designed and under construction. Both new propulsion systems in above are expected to achieve higher thermal efficiency comparing the conventional propulsion system from 30% to 45% as maximum. In addition to the new propulsion systems under construction, innovative propulsion systems such as "high efficiency steam turbine propulsion" and "Gas/Steam turbine generator & electric propulsion" have been investigated on purpose to put to practical use in the near future.
