Commelina communis L. in the Korean Peninsula was karyologically analyzed, and was compared with the Japanese C. communis from the viewpoint of speciation. The plants of Commelina communis studied in Korea had five different cytotypes of 2n=44, 48, 86, 88 and 90, that were the same as those in Japan. Karyotypical differentiation in the species would occur in two different levels of polyploidy and aneuploidy; the 2n=44 series with 2n=44 and 48 and the 2n=88 series with 2n=86, 88 and 90 and additionally with two more different aneuploidy levels such as hypoaneuploidy and hyperaneupoidy. Polyploidy and aneuploidy might lead an important role in the speciation of C. communis.
