The purpose of this study is to analyze the elderly while stepping over obstacles on a downhill slope. The subjects were 13 healthy elderly men and 12 young men. Obstacle-free walking and stepping over obstacles 5, 10, and 15cm high were monitored by a Vicon 612 system. Stepping over obstacles on a downhill slope was analyzed in the elderly and compared to the results obtained on level ground and in youth. Step length was shorter on the downhill slope than on the level ground and flexion of the trunk was larger on the level ground than on the downhill slope. Step length was shorter in the elderly than in the youth. Maximum extension of the hip joint was smaller, the dorsi-flexion of the ankle joint was larger, and the plantar-flexion of the ankle joint was smaller in the elderly. Flexion of the trunk was larger in the elderly. Stride width was narrower in the elderly. From the results of this study, the elderly had excessive flexion of the trunk, excessive narrowing of the stride width, and limited hip extension on the downhill slope compared to the youth. The risk of falling was higher in the elderly when stepping over obstacles on the downhill slope, though they showed some adaptations. This study suggests that improvement of the walking pattern and increased range of motion are needed to prevent falls in the elderly.
