Shi-Bu-Shi `Be-not-Be' construction is a unique disjunctive question form in Chinese. When foreign learners of Chinese use this form, they frequently produce errors with the semantic stress by misplacing Shi-Bu-Shi in the question. This study has therefore, examined several well-known Chinese grammar works and four recently published grammar textbooks forteaching Chinese as a foreign language. Most of these works mention the flexibility of the position of Shi-Bu-Shi in a question. However, none of these works addresses the issue of the relationship between semantics and the focus of the question, which may differ according to the various positions of the Shi-Bu-Shi. In this paper, we will further explore the following four aspects of theShi-Bu-Shi construction: 1) the position of Shi-Bu-Shi in a question; 2) the semantic and pragmatic functions of the Shi-Bu-Shi construction and its common co-located words; 3) the correlation between the position of Shi-Bu-Shi and the focus of information; and 4) the restrictions placed on the usage of the Shi-Bu-Shi construction.
