Cavitation damage of metallic materials in aqeous solutions may be contributed by both mechanical or hydraudynamical action and electrochemical or corrosive action simultaneously, but this conjoint action will be obscured with respect to either effect accorbing to relative intensity of either action set up by the experimental condition, so that terms of cavitation-erosion or of cavitation-corrosion has been in common use depending upon respective intensity. The present study was carried out aiming to make clear qualitatively contribution of corrosive action to the cavitation damage of Type 431 stainless steel, which was subjected to necessary heat-treatments for providing with various corrosion-resistance as well as corresponding change in the mechanical properties, in appropriately selected corrosive solutions under consideration of the hydraudynamical action being not too strong. Results obtained are as follows. (1) It was confirmed that both the corrosion resistance in static solutions and the mechanical properties changed with the precipitation process of chromium carbides in the ferritic matrix in the dual alloy. (2) Resistance to cavitatioh damage also well reflected the precipitation process, that is the resistance varied almost with the corrosion resistance in static solutions. (3) Generally speaking, corrosive effect must de noticed even in case of cavitation damage in fresh water so far as the mechanical effect does not annul the above effect.
