This paper is intended as an investigation of reading process. Through measurement of reading speed, it was observed that not only the difficulty of a text but various factors affect the reading speed. Observations of phonological coding and "silent" reading revealed that the numbers of unknown words and words with difficult pronunciation do not hinder the reading speed, contrary to our expectations. Whether phonological coding/ "silent" reading enhance reading speed and understanding or not remains to be proved.
