Examining Interference Effect of Unpleasant Stimulus on Motor Responses in Simple and Choice Reaction Time Tasks Using Color Cues of Picture

• This study investigated the interference effect of unpleasant emotional stimuli on motor response using simple reaction time (SRT) and choice reaction time (CRT) task. Sixty color images and sixty gray-scale images were used consisting of three emotional categories-pleasant, neutral and unpleasant, respectively. In order to exclude any influence of perceptual ambiguity and complexity of unpleasant pictures on reaction time (RT), we required participants to discriminate between color and gray-scale pictures, and to ignore meanings of picture. Participants (n=55) performed SRT and CRT tasks. In the SRT task, there were no differences in RTs between the emotional valence of pictures. On the other hand, the results in the CRT task indicated that RTs to unpleasant pictures were significantly longer than those to pleasant pictures. Moreover, RTs for CRT tasks were slower overall than those for SRT tasks. The results suggested that unpleasant stimuli interfered with motor processing when participants were required to choose a motor response or when participants needed more processing resources to perform the task.
