For analyzing the coarticulation effect of a consonant on a vowel, we presented a new representation and analysis method which is based on similarity measurement of articulatory data. Rather than investigating the vocal tract shape changes caused by coarticulation, we investigate the vocal tract shape similarity changes caused by coarticulation. We took the middle vowel /a/ in CV and VC combinations as our investigation object based on articulatory EMMA data using eight measurement points. The CV and VC mean that in three-phoneme combinations, one side is fixed with a consonant, another side is either a consonant or a vowel. Based on the collected articulatory data, we constructed a vocal tract shape similarity graph. By spectral graph clustering, we could visualize the vocal tract shape distribution on the graph based on their similarity. From the clusters on the graph, for CV collections, we found that there were some conditional distribution clusters on the graph which show high compactness, while no such an obvious cluster for VC collections. The compactness of the clusters may manifest a strong coarticulation effect in the collected data. In addition, we proposed a similarity matrix entropy concept to measure the compactness of the distribution which can be used as a measurement of degree of coarticulation. Based on the entropy value, we found different degree of coarticulation from different consonants quantitatively.
