In this paper, the leaky mode S-parameter extraction technique is employed to obtain the propagation characteristics of leaky modes of cylindrical microstrip lines. Compared with complicated mathematical derivations of the full-wave analysis in cylindrical coordinates, this method involved only simple computations to obtain the propagation constants of the leaky modes from the scattering parameters of transmission lines of different sections. Propagation characteristics from this method are validated with those obtained from the spectral domain approach in cylindrical coordinates. The obtained propagation characteristics are then used to design leaky-wave antennas based on the cylindrical microstrip structures. Radiation patterns of the cylindrical leaky-wave antennas are presented.
