Volcanic ash was collected from Moscow regions of Washington State, U. S. A., after the 18th May eruption of Mt. St. Helens. The ash was given intratracheally to guinea pigs. The acute and chronic influence of the ash was studied morphologically. Volcanic ash caused slight pulmonary damages which were characterized by mononucelar cell proliferation. The ash was phagocytized by both the bronchiolar and alveolar epithelial cells. But the inflammatory reactions were not progressive and no significant fibrosis was found at 6 months after exposure.
