Electron microscopic studies of the envelope of the algal packets of Anabaena-containing and Anabaena-free Azolla plants were performed. In the sections of both types of plants, layers appearing to correspond to the envelope were observed on the surfaces of cavities both that were forming and that had already formed. However, these layers were not observed on the outer surfaces of mature leaves and of mesophyll cells in dorsal leaves, where the surface of the epidermal cells was abutted by an electron-opaque layer which was less than 5nm thick, despite the fact that a large number of electron micrographs was examined. No differences in general appearance of the envelopes between Anabaena-containing and Anabaena-free Azolla were observed. These observations indicate that the occurrence and ultrastructure of the envelope are not affected by the cyanobionts.
