In this paper, using some alluvial and diluvial soils in Osaka Prefecture and Kaolin clay et al. which come into the market, and volcanic ash soil, it is described that the grain size distribution becomes log-normal distribution. Therefore, the grain size distribution is expressed by geometric mean grain size and geometric standard deviation. The new defined coefficient of uniformity (Uc) and coefficient of curvature (Uc) which utilize the characteristic properties of the grain size distribution give physical meaning corresponding to conventional Uc and Uc respectively. As a result, it becomes obvious that the former can adequately express the range and shape of the grain size accumulation curves as compared with the latter respectively. Also, especially for fine grain size smaller than 0.01mm equivalent diameter, it seems that the centrifugal sedimentation method is useful, but since the difference between hydrometer method (J.I.S.) and centrfugal sedimentation method is large, real grain size distribution curve is required to be examined with another method, for example, with a microscope.
