The purpose of the present study is to examine the possibility to evaluate the work intensity during practices of basic skill and games of the table tennis by measuring the heart rate and %Vo_2 max. As for measurement in this experiment, heart rate was recorded during practices in basic skill and games of the table tennis. In order to examine the comparative intensity of the table tennis, oxygen intake was measured on the same subjects during maximum and submaximum works on the treadmill. The experimental subjects in this study were fourteen healthy male students aged 19 to 21, among whom eight students were club members of the table tennis. Following results were obtained; 1) Average heart rates during middle rally and foot work were about the same for club members and the untrained students, although the work quantities were larger for the former group. It was assumed that the above observation was resulted from the difference in physical fitness and skill. 2) It is possible to estimate the work intensity by the indirect method irrespective of the difference in skill within the error of 5 to 8%, if the works in question are of the same kind as the middle rally with the intensities corresponding to the heart rate of about 120 to 135 and the oxygen intake of about 50 %Vo_2max. 3) The Vo_2 max may be estimated by the heart rate measurement within the error of 5 to 10%, if the works in question are of the same kind as the foot work with the intensity corresponding to the oxygen intake of about 80%Vo_2 max. 4) The %Vo_2max estimated from the heart rate during table tennis games was found to be indifferent to the difference in skill, indicating that the students played the games with the intensities corresponding to their individual physical fitness. 5) It was suggested that the estimation of the work intensity from the heart rate during the table tennis exercises might have an error of about ±10%, if the measurements were made in field.
