1. A large number of bacterial isolates was obtained from the rotted onion bulbs. The results of the comparative studies on the morphological, physiological and also pathogenic characteristics of these isolates showed that Aplanobacter cepivorus (DELACROIX) C. ELLIOTT and Bacterium destructans NAKATA together with Erwinia carotovora (JONES) HOLLAND as well as E. aroideae (TOWNSEND) HOLLAND are able to cause the soft rot of onions. 2. In this Investigation the writer has found many strains showing the intermediate characteristics between E. carotovora and E. aroideae, but differing with one another in minor physiological characteristics, especially in fermentability of sugars. 3. Although Apl. cepivorus and Bact. destructans are both dealt with the synonyms of E. carotovora in sixth edition of BERGEY'S Manual of Determinative Bacteriology, the writer considers them to be independent species. Therefore, they may be treated better under the name of E. cepivora and E. destructans. 4. In the writer's investigations, no correlation was recognized between the intensity of their pathogenecity and their production of protopectinase. 5. In the inoculation experiments using some isolates, the disease did not progress on onion-bulbs and the inoculated point dried out in a short time, being surrounded by a light brown discoloration. The membrane was dyed only in one celled layer on the punctured wound by treating with the phloroglucinol-hydrochloric acid and it was also dyed yellow with PAULY reagens. 6. So far as these reactions are concerned, it is presumed that some phenolic compounds, which act as obstructive substances for the causal organism, may be produced around the inoculated point. However, the decisive conclusion should be given after the completion of micro- and histochemical researches.
