To give an effective vocabulary class or to improve the vocabulary ability of EFL learners, it is necessary to measure their vocabulary size accurately first of all. The purpose of this research is to investigate the receptive vocabulary size of the first to third year students at Nagaoka National College of Technology and to describe its characteristics. The subjects were 246 Japanese students at NNCT, who took the vocabulary size test which was thought to be the most appropriate at the time. The same test was given to 192 students at a high school in order to draw a parallel between those two schools. The results showed that the average receptive vocabulary size of the first to third-year students was about 1900, 2690, and 2650 words respectively, and that there was no statistically significant difference between the second and third-year students.
