The microwave oven brings convenience and safety for the elderly; however, it has a trend to microelectronics, and the elderly have more difficulties operating it. Through the investigation, we can know that the elderly would be affected by the comprehension, recognition, and like in operating panels, even in age and education level. We compared two different interfaces of manipulation. The result indicates that numerals are preferred to time setting and comprehension of heat sections, while letters are preferred for advanced level buttons. The bigger the contrast between letters and background, the easier it is to read. Likewise, it will not be easy to understand Auto Cooking through a bunch of letters. Visual images using an icon are easier to read than written instructions. The instruction "Start" is much clearer than "On/Off". Colors help gathering attention, sound assists for better receiving, and buttons with lights are more distinguishable for the elderly.
