1. There were no differences in aggressiveness among the different species of Pythium with different degree of pathogenicity. 2. "Macerating enzyme" activity of Pythium in vitro varied with culture medium and was not always correlated to its virulence. There was, however, a possible correlation of the enzyme when produced only by highly virulent and when a large number of Pythium was used. 3. "Macerating enzyme" activity in extracts of potato tissue decayed by Pythium was correlated to the virulence of the fungus. Maximum macerating activity of extracts obtained from tubers decayed by highly virulent Pythium was reached more rapidly within a limited period of time than by moderately virulent one. 4. All organisms used even in slightly virulent Pythium, except for avirulent one, were able to penetrate into freshly wounded potato tubers and produced soft rot.
