• The oxygen exchange reaction of γ-Pyrone was carried out in aqueous neutral, acidic and basic solutions using H_2^<18>O. It was found that appreciable amounts of ^<18>O were incorporated into γ-Pyrone under the basic condition and that the ^<18>O incorporation into carbonyl oxygen was rather low than that into ring oxygen. The higher value for ^<18>O incorporation in ring oxygen may be due to facile opening of the pyrone ring in the aqueous alkaline solution.
