1. To recover the checked growth of Brassica chinensis L. due to the injury brought about by the sea-water, the effect of two forms of nitrogen viz. NO_3 and NH_4 was studied by means of sand culture under glass. In a nutrient solution, besides 6000p.p.m. of sodium chloride, NO_3 and NH_4 were added in seven different proportions by the combinations of NaNO_3, (NH_4)_2SO_4 and NH_4NO_3. The ratios of NO_3-nitrogen to NH_4-nitrogen in different culture solutions were provided 10:0, 9:1, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, 1:9 and 0:10. 2. Plants in the plots 10:0, 9:1 and 7:3 showed vigorous growth, while those in the remaining plots showed reduced growth in conformity to the decreasing ratios of NO_3 to NH_4. Chlorosis on the leaves was noticed in the plots 3:7 and 1:9, and especially remarkable in 0:10. 3. Analyses of the leaves showed that an increased proportion of NH_4-nitrogen in the solution resulted increased percentage of nitrogen, phosphrus, chlorine and sodium of the dry matter and decreased percentage of potassium, calsium and magnesium. 4. Sufficient supply of NO_3-nitrogen for the crop seemed to inhibit the absorption of C1' and alleviate the injury by the sea-water. In a case at present met with, an abundant application of NH_4-nitrogen would not be recommended.
