The purpose of this paper is to examine the opinions of urban non-farm residents on urban farm land preservation. The survey was conducted with a questionnaire schedule in 1992 to the policy monitors of Osaka prefecture. The survey results revealed that the urban residents were well aware of scarcity of greenness in their residence and they do have need for green amenity. They were concerned about the wide range of environmental problems. They favorably evaluated local farm products and the functions of urban farm land. Thus a majority of the urban non-farm residents considered urban farm land should be preserved. However, what they would do for this end is at most rather passive personal assistance. One of the underlying factors of this contradictory attitude is a considerable disparity in asset holding between farmers and non-farm residents. It would be a great challenge to reach the consensus for farm land preservation while the indifferent attitude of non-farm residents persists.
