November 1991,a daily eight hour HDTV broadcast, direct to the home via satellite, started in Japan. Programs are produced and supplied by NHK and other broadcasters. Some technical features, including a 60Mbps MUSE digital transmission system employed for an international satellite link, and a portable EFP unit composed of a CCD camera and a half-inch VCR are described. Also, the perspectives of the development in HDTV equipment and technology are discussed.
