• Television uses images from many sources, including video cameras, motion picture film, and still graphics. All proposed HDTV systems use one or more framestores in both the transmitter and receiver. This allows the characteristics of the source, channel, and display to be decoupled. Different transmission frame rates can be used for images with different origination frame rates. By sending a few bits of data describing the source, the TV channel can be used more efficiently. Many of the basic ideas described in this paper were developed by the Advanced Television Research Program at MIT.
