An important topic in current research on visual communication systems is how to achieve convincing total display realism. By using three-dimensional display techniques, the observer is presented with a realistic display of a simulated environment creating a visual illusion of an actual physical environment. This paper presents a new head-tracking technique to attain a full color stereoscopic video display system. Using this head-tracking system the stereoscopic area is increased by a factor of three and stabilized stereoscopic images can be observed. Two new kinds of large rear-projection stereoscopic display systems that do not require the use of special glasses are also presented. Experimental tests, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed systems, are described.
