Prosobranch gastropods have the osphradium which is considered to be an olfactory organ located near the ctenidium in the mantle cavity. In this study, osphradia of 42 species of prosobranch gastropods were morphologically compared. As a result, it was revealed that osphradia were well developed in the Mesogastropoda and Neogastropoda and less developed in the Archeogastropoda, and six types were discriminated. The morphology of osphradium seems to have a close relation to the feeding habit rather than to the phylogenetic relationship. The archeogastropoda have a simple linear osphradium which was classified as Type O. Type I is a taeniate form. The most species of the Mesogastropoda having this types are herbivores, detritus feeders, plankton collectors or ectoparasitic. Type II is a taeniate form having many leaflets. The Naticidae (benthic hunters) have the osphradium of this type. Type III is a triangular form which is seen in the Cypraeidae (herbivores). Type IV is a bipectinate form which is seen in the Stenoglossa (benthic hunters or scavengers). Type V is a bipectinate form having more complicated structure. This type is seen in the Tonnoidea, Fasciolariidae and Toxoglossa (benthic hunters).
