Analysis of the composition of the Hawaiian marine mollusks indicates a number of features which appear to be characteristic of insular marine molluscan faunas in general and others which may be peculiar to the Hawaiian Islands. Those features which the Hawaiian marine mollusks share with other insular molluscan faunas are the attentuate character of the fauna which comprises about 1000 species ; a high gastropod : low bivalve ratio ; and a high neogastropod : low archaeogastropod ratio. A feature of the Hawaiian marine mollusks which may be peculiar is the high proportion of opisthobranchs in the fauna. The isolated position of the Islands which form the north-eastern periphery of the range of a number of Indo-West-Pacific species has stamped the fauna with unique characters : both large and small size, changes in habitat, and endemicity. The Hawaiian endemics appear to be more closely related to those species which range through the Indo-West-Pacific than to those which are restricted to the Pacific basin.
