Recently, owing to rapid economic growth, construction of infrastructure and development of production and consumption, the volume of freight transportation has been increasing in China. The increase of transportation has promoted economic growth in each province. The freight transportation volume has been influenced by social and economic conditions and location of industries in each province. This study is to elucidate how these conditions in each province affect the rail freight transportation volume. The change of volume of arrival and dispatching by railway in each province has been analyzed by regression analysis with regard to volume of production of agriculture and industries, and distance between capitals of each province. This paper consists of three sections. First, existing studies are reviewed and hypotheses are presented. Second, data and methods of analysis are explained. Third, rail freight transportation volume in each province has been analyzed by method of regression analysis. Finally, the author points out future directions of research.
