• Alexander Hay Japp, a Scottish publisher and litterateur, published Thoreau : His Life and Aims in 1877, a second biography of Thoreau after Channing's. Indeed his biography has some defects, but we should appreciate his attempt to depict a full picture of Thoreau against Emerson's and Lowell's biased ones. He was the first critic who depicted an ecologist Thoreau by pointing out that Thoreau was a "reconciler" of men and Nature.
