Adsorption has been recognized as an effective method in blood purification, which is based on the affinity between adsorbent and target material. For developing new adsorption columns, in comparison to the adsorption capacity, selectivity is a more important parameter. Though the batch method is frequently used for rough screening, detailed characteristics of the adsorbent such as adsorption isotherm or mass transfer coefficient are necessary to include in the newly developing adsorption columns for blood purification. On the other hand, in the case of the adsorbent, model solutions are frequently inappropriate for an evaluation because mechanisms other than sieving prevail in the adsorption process. Therefore, confirmation by using blood or plasma and an adsorption column is essential for the designing of new adsorption devices, however, it is not easy to get adequate amounts of such blood or plasma. For this reason, computer simulation is a very effective tool in designing new adsorption columns. In this paper, phenomena characteristics of adsorption, such as the limits of adsorption capacity and competitive adsorption, are pointed out, and the application of the computer simulation to the development of our regeneration adsorption system are presented.
