The main concern of medical ethics is to establish a better relationship between physician and patient. The discipline evolved from a response to judiciary efforts to redeem medical damages by acknowledging patient's autonomy in a medical decision-making process. This paper describes how medical ethics is taught in a philosophy department and at a medical school in the United States, explores some of the activities of a medical ethics center or institute, notes how some of the main concepts are dealt with by philosophers whose background was predominantly analytic, and outlines new career of a hospital ethics consultant. Some of the key words in medical ethics in the last couple of decades are paternalism, autonomy and informed consent. They are given a linguistic and conceptual analysis by analytic philosophers. Special attention is directed to Jay Katz's "conversational model of informed consent". One observation can also be made that an effort to realize more democratic medicine originates from a paternalistic interest in the necessity of the establishment of patient autonomy before joint physician-patient decision-making is possible, -in actuality most patients are still blindly dependent on the phsician's exercise of discretion.
