Error control coding and data compression are essential techniques for modern high-performance computer systems and high-speed communication networks. These data processing techniques will also be important for future high-performance spacecraft data-handling systems since these systems will be operated under a severe and constrained environment. Hence they require efficient data processing algorithms, such as strong error control codes and low complexity data compression algorithms. This paper briefly reviews conventional techniques for error control coding and image compression. We then present a new class of multiple-bit error correcting/detecting codes and a new video compression algorithm having low encoding complexity, both of which are suitable for satellite data handling systems.
