The concentrations of α_1-acid glycoprotein, sialic acid and plasma fibronection were determined by commercial Kits in 111 newbon infants, from 0 to 7 days of age, consecutively. The study groups consist of three groups; 8O term heslthy infants, 23 low birth-weight infants (1,500-2,499g) and 8 very low birth-weight infants (<1,500g). Alpha-1-acid glycoprotein levels in the term infants rose significantly from 10.5±11.6mg/dl on day 0, to 31.8±11.3mg/dl on day 7. Similarly, sialic acid levels rose from 28.8±6.5mg/dl to 45.5±4.9 mg/dl, and plasma fibronectin levels rose from 133.8±44.9 μg/ml to 174.6±53.5 μg/ml. These values were significantly lower than those in the healthy adults. The values in low birth-weight infants were lower thim those in the term infants. The plasma fibronectin levels of very low birthweight infants were lower than those in term infants. There was statistically significant correlation between sialic acid values and α_1-acid glycoprotein values (r=0.746, p<0.05, y=27.9+0.306x). The assessment of those levels of α_1-acid glycoprotein, sialic acid and plasma fibronectin may be valuable in monitoring the states of infants, however, we should be ln mind that the levels of these markers are valuable according to both the age and the birth weight.
