The frequency of chromosome aberrations (CA) and sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) after intravenous injection of 50 mg/kg of 7,12-dimethylbenz (a) anthracene (DMBA) and oral administration of 200 mg/kg of I-nitroso-1-butylurea (NBU) was studied in vivo in bone marrow cells of the rat under various hemopoietic conditions and Sudan III pretreatment. The percentage of metaphase cells with CA and SCE increased in anemia and decreased in polycythemia. On the other hand, the incidence of DMBA-induced CA and SCE was suppressed by Sudan III pretreatment given 24 hours before DMBA injection. The above results are consistent with our previous observations that CA and SCE are a related phenomenon although thIs parallelism did not provide evidences for the causal relationship of both phenomena.
