To examine the relationship between the cognitive style (Reflection, Impulsivity, Fast-Accurate, and Slow-Inaccurate) and visual scanning mode, eve movements of 40 preschoolers were analyzed on their first and second responses on the Matching Familiar Figures Test. On the first response, Reflective children (R) depended on standard stimulus and often exhibited a standard-to-variant pair comparison ("return") pattern. Impulsive children (I) showed biased fixation on the variant, and ignored some variants. Both R and I maintained their own scanning patterns on the second response following the first response. Fast-Accurate children (FA) showed the same scanning pattern as the I on the first response, but on the second response, they changed it like the R in order to avoid further errors. Slow-Inaccurate children (SI) often exhibited a sequential scanning ("run") pattern on the first response, but on the second response, they showed the same pattern as the I. The results of the R and I provide support for Wright's (1971) three stage developmental sequence of visual scanning. Several interpretations of the FA and SI's eye movement patterns are discussed.
