This paper uses a case-study approach to examine the challenges facing a former state enterprise in order to survive in the new market economy of the 1990s. A cellulose and paper plant in Russia, Baikal'sk Cellulose and Paper Plant (BCPP), has been chosen for detailed analysis. To clarify all stages of the survival process, this paper analyses a range of internal documents on the re-profiling program of this enterprise from 1987 to 2000. It concludes that economical and political factors, reflecting a world market driven by globalization, and accustomed prikhvatizatiia (grabbing) in the intra-regional political arena and between the center and periphery against a background of political devolution since the end of the Soviet era have contributed to a delay in restructuring.
