An ellobiid pulmonate gastropod specimen was discovered from a shallow marine, subtidal, muddy sandstone deposit temporally exposed below the Mapulo Limestone in the quarry of Fortune Cement Co., Ltd., Taysan, Batangas Province, southern Luzon, Philippines. The age of this sandstone is assumed to be late Miocene or early Pliocene. The specimen is generally well preserved and can definitely be assigned to Ellobium aurismidae (Linnaeus), a species widespread in modern mangrove forests in the tropical Indo-Pacific region. This is considered the first fossil occurrence of this unique species in Southeast Asia. Though the specimen was found associated with a shallow-marine subtidal molluscan assemblage it is presumed that it was transported from a nearby mangrove area. This finding together with some other fossil evidence suggest that molluscan communities seen in modern mangrove forests and swamps have already existed in the Philippine Archipelago since Late Miocene or early Pliocene time.
