The three major nationwide surveys (nationwide natural environment survey, nationwide wetland survey, and natural environment survey on uninhabited islands) on the natural environment in Korea have been conducted since 1997, which provide valuable information to policy makers for preservation of natural environment. Up to now a total of 29,828 species in Korea are reported: 18,029 species of animals, 8,271 species of plants, 1,625 species of fungi, 736 species of protista, and 1,167 species of prokaryotes. During the nationwide surveys, approximately total numbers of 700,000 specimens representing 6,500 species have been collected. To reposit collection of these natural resources, the government of Korea initiate construction of a building named National Biological Resources Center. The building of the museum will be established near the National Institute of Environmental Research. This center will play a major role in supporting systematists and taxonomists as a reference center, collection storehouse, educational resources, and laboratories for much systematic research.
