This article introduces insect collections in Mainland China and tries to show how they were developed in the last fifty years. Insect collection in the Institute of Zoolology, CAS (the Chinese Academy of Sciences), is the largest one in China and maintains many valuable specimens of very long history. The majority of its specimens were collected within China during the 15 large expeditions organized mainly by CAS. It is thus a very important collection to study insect fauna of China. In order to promote a sustainable increase and development of insect collections, the author proposes to expand the functions of the insect collection, so that it can support (1) taxonomic studies pursuing species diversity discovery, (2) phylogenetic studies to find the most reasonable explanation of diversity origin and evolution, and (3) the studies on the protection and conservation of species diversity, aiming at a sustainable use of natural resource. For this goal, a long-termed research was started seven years ago. Up to now, the author and his colleagues have investigated totally about 400 plots representing 35 different zonal plantations in 25 different regions (or nature reserves). Some results of insect taxonomy or biodiversity studies based on these investigations have been published.
