On the assumption that venture capitalists are critical to helping accelerate the growth of venture business, the current research addresses the question of whether there are any differences between the approaches of Japanese and US venture capitalists in supporting venture businesses. In other words, the focus of this research is whether the US model of active involvement by US venture capitalists in the management of venture businesses is also applicable to Japan. Judging from the fact that many well-known US venture capital funds that entered Japan in the latter half of the 1990's have withdrawn after only a few years, it can be said that simply applying the US approach is no guarantee of success in Japan. If that is the case, what is the exact nature of the active involvement in management of venture businesses that should be emphasized in order to be successful in Japan? To address these questions, this research compares the US and Japanese approaches to supporting the creation and growth of technology R&D and technology commercialization venture businesses. In doing so, it is important of point out that the priority given to different types of management support activities by the venture capitalist must differ based on industry factors such as hi-tech versus low-tech and the growth stage of the venture such as startups, early stage ventures and late stage ventures. For that reason, this paper will focus on the importance in Japan of venture capitalists active support of the managment of startup and early stage hi-tech companies.
