Nowadays, it is very difficult to get any information about birth-rituals because of social, structural changes many people pay no respect for. Some young, in general, don't know about the rituals and their meanings, and the elder wouldn't like to give information about them. But the rituals are very important items to know and study Japanese folklore, and by the ritual-studies we can approach Japanese old and fundamental mentalities. If we pay attention on these issues, we can find out the Japanese mentalities on new life, birth-ideas and the idea for death, that is, Japanese mentalities on "Life and Death". From such idea the editor tries to analyze Japanese mentalities on "Life and Death" by birth-rituals. These reports are written by the students of Nihon Fukushi Univ. (日本福祉大学) in 1993. as a task of home work for summer vacation. The first student wrote on the rituals of Okinawa, especially on Kawaori=川下り, which has a relation to Hashiwatari=橋渡り(Hashikoshi橋越rituals) and the relation suggests the importance of water elements to our life. The second student wrote on a life history of an old woman, who lived in Kochi-prefcture, and the third student wrote on rituals of Mie-prefecture and some superstition on twin babies. These three reports are very unique in respect of several rituals. This is why the editor picked up the three reports.
