Although developmental disabilities such as mental retardation are fully recognized in Japan, there still exists an alarming lack of awareness of dyslexia, or reading disability. Though Japanese teachers certainly recognize the presence of students experiencing reading difficulties in their classes, there has been little formal identification of this disability, and even denial of its existence in Japan. This paper will discuss theoretical, historical, and social influences that have delayed the formal recognition of reading disability.
