Haiku-poetry was very instrumental to the development of Ezra Pound's theory of imagism. Haiku-poetry has a number of features particular to it such as superposition of images, season-words, seventeen syllables, cutting-words (kireji) and rhythm. However, he disregarded all these features except for superposition of images. 'In a Station of the Metro/The apparition of these faces in the crowd;/Petals on a wet, black bough.' (one of his works) represents his theory of imagism and the technique he adopted from Haiku-poetry. He soon left the Imagist movement and participated in W. Lewis's vorticist movement. He later left the vorticist movement, and he started writing The Cantos, his monumental epic of the 20th century. It is said that Pound left the Imagist movement and discarded imagism mainly because he found it rather unsuitable to describe thought. My position is that Pound maintained his imagism all through his life. You will find haiku-like lines, images and their superpositions even in The Cantos, which he continued to write until nearly the end of his life.
