Increasing evidence for a causal link between human papilloma virus and carcinoma of the larynx and precancerous conditions has emerged in recent research. Twenty one cases of laryngeal carcinoma, four cases of laryngeal papilloma, two cases of laryngeal keratosis snd six cases of normal larynx are studied in this paper. We deal mainly with the relationship between the subtypes of HPV-DNA and laryngeal tissue DNA by the way of Dot blot hybridization with probe of HPV-DNA type 11 and probe of HPV-DNA type 16. The results are as follows: 1. The rates of HPV-DNA types in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, laryngeal papilloma, and normal larynx are 66.66%, 100%, and 16.66% respectively (p<0.05). 2. HPV type 16 is a high-risk virus and HPV type 11 is a low-risk virus in turning the tissue into carcinoma. The rates of HPV type 16 infection in laryngeal carcinoma, precancerous conditions, and normal larynx are 38.09%, 25%, and 0% respectively. The result indicates that the HPV type 16 is responsible for the laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Whether HPV type 11 is responsible for the laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma is unclear now but it can be an important factor in benign tumor.
