Pharaoh of Egypt, the King of Kings of Persia, the Emperor of China, and the Emperor of Japan acceded to the throne after visiting dual shrines; in ancient Greece and the Near East there were a pair of shrines, one representing death, the other representing life; two statues of man and woman or death and life stood at the entrance gate of the temple, the palace or the village as well; those passing through the gate were ceremonially cleansed; in Japan there are the Yamamiya (Mountain shrine) and the Satomiya (Villaga shrine) of dualistic origin; many old Japanese shrines have upper shrines and lower ones; they completed a ceremony of death and rebirth atter worshipping the dual shrines.
