• The present paper is an attempt to develop a position about the possibility for avant-garde literature to exist in the non-intellectual, non-philosophical, over-mediatized landscape now prevailing in the world of publishing in France. After examining various aspects of failure in the literature of the past, which permitted the determination of standards for successful literature, we consider whether those standards are still valid in the present process of literary creation, and if not, what premisses are required to meet the philosophical aspirations for future literary production.
