The present author approached the theme through reviewing Japanese cultural history and the role in it of Confucian ideology. In societies where Confucianism is the intellectual backbone, the individual's "private" sphere is subordinated to his/her role (persona) in society. Under the domination of persona, individual's experience and power to work with her/his private inner self are limited. Anima is inactive; only animus rules the individual. Pastoral care and counseling in this context need to focus on the empowerment of individuals to live lives supported by their "private" self which is guided by his/her anima. The danger for pastoral caregivers and counselors in this Confusian cultural world is clients' expectations towoard paternalism; helpers become father figures. In such cases, paternalism becomes dis-empowerment; it destroys a client's chance to work with her/his own issues and to grow in struggle. Moreover, it become the greatest obstacle to her/his encounter with God, whose presence is most real for those engaged in suffering and struggle.
