According to Plato's description in his Parmenides 128A-D Zeno wrote his treatise in order to come to the support of his teacher Parmenides' doctrine "εν το παν", while in Parmenides' preserved verbatim fragments we see his main doctrine was "there is nothing but the ον". "In this respect then Plato's report appears to be 'out of focus' " (Kurt von Fritz, "Zeno von Elea in Plato's Parmenides"). In any way, however, it is unquestionable that Zeno's treatises were exclusively designed to refute the existence of many things (πολλα) and focused on the problem of the homogeneity and indivisibility of the continuum. So Parmenides said in his fragment B8, 22-25: ονδε διαιρετον εστιν, επει παν εστιν ομοιον…. τω ξυνεχε〓 παν εστιν Zeno's argumentations against plurality intended to preserve Parmenides' doctrine about the homogeneity and the indivisibility of the ον and his attacks against the motion reported in Aristotle's Physica Z, 9 were the applications of his analysis of the plurality to the continuum: space, time and mass. My paper presents a full analysis of Zeno's argumentations against plurality reported in Simplicius' commentary 139-27 and tries to identify the theory against which Zeno struggled and his enemies with whom he fought.
