This is a paper presented before the 1990 JACET Convention held at Kanda University of International Studies in Chiba on September 7th, 1990. My presentation, the first part of the symposium on Folklore and English Language Education was followed by three other speakers, Prof. Fumio Okutsu, Prof. Setsuko Nakano, and Prof. Mikio Masui. This paper is an outgrowth of my five articles previously published, covering several aspects of English riddles. The aim of the paper is sixfold: Firstly, to elucidate the linguistic definition of the riddle. Secondly, to classify English riddles according to three kinds of problem-solving strategies: true riddles, conundrums, and the rebus. Thirdly, to exemplify the riddles in such oral traditions as myths, legends, fairy tales, and ballads. Fourthly, to consider the functions of riddles in English literature from Exeter Book to Beatrix Potter. Fifthly, to point out some cultural background to British and American riddles. Finally, to pinpoint the merits of using riddles in English language teaching.
