In the past decade, a few studies have explored the differences and similarities exhibited by Japanese and Americans in their preferences for persuasive strategies in interpersonal contexts. Although these studies, all of which were conducted by American researchers, are valuable in that they served to bring attention to this vitally important field of inquiry, the results of the studies seem to be questionable cross-culturally due to methodological and conceptual problems observed in them. This study represents a preliminary investigation of a subsequent survey examining the preferences for persuasive strategies used by Japanese and Americans. The study points out some of the major methodological drawbacks that would render the results of the above studies invalid outside American cultural contexts. It also attempts to obtain a cross-cultural definition of persuasion upon which the conceptual scheme of the survey is to be built. This will be done through an analysis of the differences and similarities exsiting between American conception of persuasion and its Japanese counterpart settoku.
